Speech

Goooooooooood morning ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to today’s fitness expo. How many are, or have been overweight? …How many know some one who is over weight?... Who has lost a love one due to a related obesity disease? Who has lost weight to put it back on again and again? Sure, some pounds drop off, but they usually return, and even add on a few more. My name is Edgar Cruz and I am a fitness coach. I have been helping many people for over ten years. My program includes extensive diet plans, a widespread workout plans and most importantly motivation to maintain the weight off. Lets loose weight and have fun. We should not think of it as a chore but a hobby. Who wants to loose weight and stay healthy?

BMI CHART
So what is obesity, and who is considered obsessed? It is an excess proportion of total body fat. When a person is 20% or more above normal weight he or she is considered obese. One common measure of obesity is the body mass index, or BMI. For a person to be considered overweight his or her BMI is measured between 25 and 29.9. For a person to be considered obese his or her BMI is over 30.

How do we become obsessed? Some factors to obesity may include your age, gender, genetics, environmental factor, physical activity, psychological factors, illness, or even medication. The most common way a person becomes obese is by consuming more calories than he or she burns. Meaning you eat more than you should and do not exercise to burn off the calories. For many individuals eating fast foods is more convenient and do not eat a nutritional diet. Eating a fast food meal can average about 1,680 calories and 74 grams of fat. Compared to a meal prepared at home, one meal can average 546 calories and 5 grams of fat. How many calories you need in a day varies with your gender, age, weight and activity level. The most common number is 2,000, which the FDA uses to determine daily values of various nutrients. So if you are eating three fast food meals a day, on average you are eating 5,040 calories daily.

Obesity in the U.S is a growing problem. Did you know that more than one-third of U.S adults are classified as obese, and approximately 12.5 million of children aged 2 through 19 years are obese? According to the Center for Disease control and Prevention that’s 35.7 % adults and 17% of our children are over weight. Do not wait to loose weight until you have a disease and are required to loose it.  Obesity is a concern because it increases the risk of many diseases and health conditions including:

1.     Coronary heart disease

2.     Liver and Gallbladder disease

3.     Sleep disorders and respiratory problems

4.     Dyslipidemia (for example, high total Cholesterol  or high levels of triglycerides)

5.     Hypertension (high blood pressure)

6.     Cancers (endometrial, breast, and colon)

7.      Type 2 diabetes

8.       Stroke

Ten ways to loose weight are to …

  1. Drink more water. 8 to 12 glasses of water should not be something to think about twice. Water helps your body to lose weight and it’s one of the most ignored among weight loss solutions. Water keeps you feeling fresh and alert hence, you don’t get a problem when it comes to focusing on losing weight.
  2. Increase the pace at which you walk.
  3. Whatever you have on your plate, for any meal, cut that in half and save the other half or give it to someone else. Eating less will also help you shed those extra pounds for good.
  4. Stop eating junk food. No Colas and No fast food items.
  5. Sleep well. 7 hours of sleep is a must. Research has shown that sleep deprivation can lead to obesity.
  6. Eat six meals a day for optimum health. Eat six times instead of the standard three. Those six meals should be small and not nearly as big as the ones you have when you eat 3 meals a day.
  7. Try to cut down the use of high fat dairy and grains from your diet.
  8. Try to cut or even eliminate added sugar from your diet.
  9. Don’t eat at least 3 hours before going to bed.
  10. Buy a cheap set of used dumbbells and start doing some lightweight training to put on some muscle mass and burn the fat. Extra muscle will help you burn even more calories while you sit or even sleep.

Are there any questions? Thank you for listening, at this moment we are passing around some brochures with more information. The brochures include my contact information if you may have any more questions and or would like to know more about me.

Speech Analysis

The first clip is a motivational clip Eric Thomas talks about the secrets to success.  He starts by saying if you would like to make six figures you can not just talk about making six figures. he uses a story of a guru to explain how to be successful. his story is about a man who goes to a guru to become successful. the guru tell the guy to go to the beach the next day so he cal learn to become successful.  when they are at the beach the guru tells him to go to the water. the guru holds his head under the water and soon after lets him breath. he explains  when you want to be success as much as you want to breath then you will be successful..

The second speech is another motivational speech of a Gunnery Sergeant who speaking to his marines before going to a mission in the war in Afghanistan.  He starts his speech by explaining that he was upset by not receiving a motivating speech by his superiors so decides on telling one. Gunny Sergeant Walgren  explains a secret that the Marine Corps has by never explaining on what is going on, and  play games.  he also stated that he knew about the mission over seven month before, and never said anything so that the marines will stay "pissed". Instead of talking about there mission in "Marjah" he goes on and tell the marines about a former Marine John Glen who was the first to orbit around the space, and ran  for senate in 1974 against Howard Metzenbaum.
Sen. Metzenbaum told  Sen. Glenn: "How can you run for Senate when you have never held a real job?" Sen. Glenn answered  "I served 23 years in the United States Marine Corps. I served through two wars. I flew 149 missions. My plane was hit by antiaircraft fire on 12 different occasions. I was in the space program. It wasn't my checkbook; it was my life on the line. It was not a nine to five job where I took time off to take the daily cash receipts to the bank. -->
I ask you to go with me....as I went the other day to a Veterans hospital and look at those men with their mangled bodies in the eye and tell them they didn't hold a job. You go with me to the space program and go as I have gone to the widows and orphans of Ed White, Gus Grissom and Roger Chaffee and you look those kids in the eye and tell them that their dad didn't hold a job.
You go with me on Memorial Day, coming up, and you stand in Arlington National Cemetery, where I have more friends than I'd like to remember and you watch those waving flags. You stand there, and you think about this nation, and you tell me that those people didn't have a job, I'll tell you, Howard Metzenbaum, you should be on your knees every day of your life thanking God that there were some men - SOME MEN - who held a job. And they required a dedication to purpose, a love of country and a dedication to duty that was more important than life itself. And their self sacrifice is what made  this country possible..... I HAVE HELD A JOB, HOWARD! What about you?"  he goes on by telling his  marines to forget all what they have been training to do. and keep trust all who are amongst each other. he explains the string has been cut and they are loose and nothing will stop them from accomplishing their mission..

Both videos are motivational speeches. Both individuals tell a story to paint a picture for there audience. Both individuals use a story that relates their audience to gain attention and help motivate their audience. Although both videos are to motivate their audience each video are different type of motivation. The first video is a speech to become successful, while the second video was a speech to inspire the Marines who were getting ready to go into battle, and remember why they were there.
At the end of pain there is success

Editorial on Gun Control

The information for this was taken from recent CBS news, LA TIMES,  and FOX NEWS articles. Below are links to read further more regarding the weapon ban

Gun control has been a controversial issue for years. Recently we have encountered the biggest fight over firearms since December's massacre at a Connecticut elementary school, in which Adam Lanza killed twenty children and six adults at Connecticut’s Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012. Lanza also killed his mother, Nancy Lanza, and shot himself as police responded to the school. The shooting reignited a debate that has divided America, with Americans disputing the right to ban assault rifles or any weapons with similar caliber, versus gun supporters who fight for their constitutional rights the second Amendment upholds.
Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting on December 14, 2012.
Senator Dianne Feinstein
Many say that if gun control were more strictly enforced it would quickly reduce the threat of crime. Senator Dianne Feinstein stated after shooting “ I remain horrified by the massacre committed at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, and I’m also incensed that our weak gun laws allow these mass killings to be carried out again and again and again,” on January 24, 2013 she proposed a plan to the Senate floor that will ban the sale, transfer, manufacturing and importation of 158 semi-automatic weapons with at least one military feature, and will also include fixed magazines that are capable of holding more than 10 rounds. The ban will prevent individuals to purchase certain weapons but I do not believe it will drop the rate of individuals dying due to gun violence. Certain drugs have been illegal for a long time, but there are many individuals who break the law and still purchase or smuggle drugs to United States.

 Senator Harry Reid

There was a lot of disbelief the ban would do good because many already owned assault rifles. Gun supporters believed the ban of the assault weapons was never a good idea. Any one who is looking to kill using assault weapons can do so with any other guns that were not listed to ban. Majority Leader Senator Harry Reid a Democrat from Nevada stated “the most controversial proposal, an assault weapons ban, had been dropped to make the remaining legislation to win approval in the Senate, which is controlled by Democrats but has plenty of gun rights supporters -- or lawmakers supported by gun-rights groups.” Further more he also stated “ there aren’t anywhere near the 51 votes for passage, much less the 60 needed to overcome an expected filibuster.”

Assault rifles often get the wrong impression with their appearance but rarely contribute in criminal activity. If assault weapons ban were enacted, it would not have had a major impact on America’s daily death toll from guns. The AR-15 is a rifle Feinstein’s proposed for the ban, only fires one round for each pull of the trigger. They are powerful, but fire smaller rounds compared to game hunting rifles that wouldn’t be affected by the assault weapons ban. Stricter laws should be enacted for individuals who purchase assault weapons. The background check should be more extensive, or maybe longer than ten days. The background should include mental illness from previous years or possibly include family members. Internet purchasing should possibly be denied for any guns and or ammunition.

DEFERRED ACTION U.S CITIZENSHIP FOR OUR CHILDREN
no more deportation for our children, instead work permits

United States has always been home to immigrants all over the world. Many migrate to the U.S to pursue better living conditions such as, freedom to practice their religion freely, to escape poverty, oppression, better employment opportunities, or simply to make a better life for themselves and their families. Unfortunately some immigrants were not allowed to follow their dream and deported back home until recently.

In June 2012 President Barack Obama announced that his administration would stop deporting undocumented young people and instead grant them temporary work permits. Immigrants will also  be allowed to obtain their driving license to be able to drive to school, work, or other areas. Each individual will be examined on a case-by-case basis to decide if they would qualify and allowed to stay in the U.S for a period of two years. On June 15th 2012 Janet Napolitano, Secretary of Homeland Security announced that effective immediately certain young individuals who were brought into United States as young children, and do not present a risk to national security or public safety and meet certain criteria will be considered for relief from removal from the country. Napolitano emphasized the grant was not an immunity nor will it prevent any person from being deported.

Department of Homeland Security began accepting applications August 15, 2012. From the estimated 1.4 million people who could be eligible for the program. As of Thursday, January 17, 2013 only 407,899 undocumented young people had applied for deferred action, and 13,366 had been rejected. Some programs were offered to help undocumented student start the deferred action. Collier County Held a free deferred action clinic for young undocumented students who may qualify. The clinic provided free legal services in English and Spanish by certified lawyers to those who come.

In order for a person to qualify one must start by completing an application and have proof of residency in the United States. The undocumented student would be eligible if they have entered the United States before the age of sixteen, are under the age of 30 at this time, and have lived in the country for at least five years. The individual must either be in school, have graduated from high school or have a GED, or have been honorably discharged by the military.  A candidate can be rejected due to a felony or significant misdemeanor convictions or by being deemed a threat to public safety or national security.

The Obama administration has granted deferred action to 154,404 young undocumented immigrants, including more than 50,000 in the month of January, according to data released on Friday, January18, 2013 by the Department of Homeland Security.

After the two year period has passed each individual will be required to repeat the application process again. However, there is no guarantee if they will be allowed to stay for another two years period.
